|The Diplomatic Regatta 2003|
Our club members regularly gather on pier C in Marina Izola, Slovenia. Viktor Baraga, Honorary Consul of Australia, is also our member and he occasionally invites different diplomats for a day's sailing.
As we are all very keen to participate on most of the local regattas, we came up with the idea of organising a regatta that has an entirely different approach from all other. The idea was to hold the Diplomatic Regatta 2003, which was also embraced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia and the minister, H.E. Dr Dimitrij Rupel.
How is the Diplomatic Regatta 2003 different from other regattas?
In the last few years the quality of regattas organised by different sailing clubs in the region has much improved, and all are relatively well organised, hence we somehow doubt that we can improve that standard.
We have decided to diversify this event by inviting diplomats and distinguished guests from the political and business communities to participate as guests on boats registered for the regatta. They will have a choice of being either an active or a passive participant on the boat, depending on their confidence and ability.
As we expect that most of the participants will have their spouses and children accompanying them, we will also have parallel activities organised, such as different water activities, sightseeing, etc.
These activities will be detailed after we receive preliminary registrations of participants, based on which we will be able to determine potential demand.
In the evening of the day of the regatta, we are organising a dinner party to accompany the awards presentation. This should also be the best time to meet people from the Slovenian diplomatic, political and business life in a relaxed environment.
Allocation of participants / invitees on particular boats
At registration, every boat will be given the option of accepting a certain number of invitees on their participating boat.
Invitees, namely diplomats, politicians and business people, will be randomly assigned to a boat, on which they will participate in the regatta as either an active or a passive sailor.
They will join the team of the boat they have randomly chosen. Diplomats will be given a flag of the country they represent to be displayed on the boat they compete on during the regatta.
The awards presentation and the dinner party
Marina Izola will prepare a large party tent with catering facilities for over 900 participants especially for this occasion. The dinner party and the awards presentation will take place after the completion of the regatta and the party will go on well into the evening. There will be live performances of several well-known performers with music and dancing. Some very nice surprises await all participants.
We are inviting all the sailors, racers and cruisers, serious and less serious, experienced and without any experience, to join the "Diplomatic Regatta 2003". We hope it to be somewhat different from other regattas, but not only that, we hope it to be a pleasant social gathering and a place to make new friends.
We are also extending our invitation to all who see this event as a potential place for meeting new business partners and promoting their existing businesses.
We look forward to seeing you all on September 13th, 2003 in Marina Izola on the Diplomatic Regatta 2003.
